Games and tournaments: projects, declarations, negotiations, voting, organizing, playing

Project process (that is possible on this blog) from creating to making it alive. Steps.

1. Create a game and/or tournament project. Useful questions to yourself - write out, check out - what do you like, what do you want?

2. Declare your projects. Write down your preferences and show them to us.

3. Negotiations. Talk about your project to others: Read what others like, want, need, prefer, think...

4. Voting. Find out community choices(preferences) within your project (within your project limits and even beyond them). (You can ask certain questions(as yes/no questions) in this blog and wait for answers, and count/analyze positive, negative or nonnegative answers.)

5. Choice. Choose one project of many possible variants, with your knowledge of community opinions(choices, ideas).

6. Organize. Prepare the project to be living. For example, find the best playing time, schedule, and announce it publicly.

7. You can use my blog:
A. As forum creating projects, getting various types of help.
B. As a project declaration board.
C. As a project discussion forum.
D. As a voting board.
E. As a certain source of knowledge and ideas.

8. Play! :)
Are your project is intended for playing?
The Project created and arranged?
Then let's play. :)

My two special offers

First offer: training

Let's play in "training mode".
Rules.
Offer "takeback"*, give "moretime"*, accept "takeback"* whenever you want.
Offer or accept to "adjourn"* the game if you like to continue the game next time.
Or simply refuse to accept "takeback"* if you want to end the game. Recommendations: "set noescape off", "set autoflag off".

Second offer: semi-correspondence

Let's play semi-correspondence (e.g. chess).
Example.
Game: Wild fr.
Time control: 45 minutes +180 seconds(after every move).
Game is scheduled to restart every 24 hours from last game restart,
and is adjourned(adjourn)* at every 10-th move.
Would we accept these regulations or would you like to make your own special offer?
When we could start playing? Recommendation: "set noescape off".

*Terms: takeback, moretime, adjourn are FICS commands.

If you want to find a player for training or semi-correspondence, write about it here in comment box.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Examples:
Ex.1: "I want to play chess in training mode with time control 15 15 (15 minutes and 15 seconds after every move) this weekend.

Ex. 2: "Seek chess, in training mode, 15 15, this weekend".

Ex. 3: "Next week I Seek wild fr(Fisher Random), semi-corr., 60 300, with 10 move adjourn and 24 hours restart.
Ex. 4: "I am searching to play Fisher Random chess next week. Time control: 60 minutes plus 300 seconds after every move. Game is adjourned after every 10 moves. Game restarted after 24 hours starting with the first move."

FICS formula and logic

FICS formula supports Boolean algebra.
[ a ⇒ b ] ⇔ [ (¬a) ∨ b ] ⇔ [ (¬a) ∨ (b ∧ a) ]
In this case the rightmost expression lets us better understand the leftmost.
Example: FICS formula !chess | etime>=15 is equivalent to !chess | (chess & etime>=15). From the right(colored in green) formula is clear what the left(and right) formula will do - It will make you accessible to all !chess boards' seek advertisements(ads), plus, chess board ads those etime is equal or more then 15.

Preparing to play chess (openings)

1. Moves
If you are going to play first move X( e.g. 1. e4), it is best to know (remember) at least one move ahead, - to know what you will respond to any of possible 20 moves (including all opponent moves that looks "foolish").
If you are playing 1. e4. It is good to know what to respond after all these moves: 1. e4 a6, 1. e4 a5, 1. e4 Na6, 1. e4 b6, 1. e4 b5, 1. e4 c6, 1. e4 c5, 1. e4 Nc6,..., 1. e4 h6, 1. e4 h5, 1. e4 Nh6.
For example if you are going to play 1.e4 to black move 1...e5, you might prepare at least one move, let's say - 2. Nf3.
2. Plans
The other side of your improved game is plan. The plan is what you are thinking by making certain moves. Moves can be "bad", but if you are thinking(or having plans), then you will achieve something. The more plans you have and the more moves satisfy them, the bigger chances that any one of your most acceptable(or realistic) plans will be successful. 3. Evaluations
The third part of the game are evaluations(or expectations, feelings etc. ).
What do you expect from what has happened? How do you feel in this position? What(and why) do you like and what you don't like in the position. Answers to these questions might help you to improve your plans and sequences of moves.
4. Experience
The more you know, the more objects you can put in your plans and the more accurate positional measures(evaluations) you can take. So you can put ending objects(to plan ending)in your calculations even in the opening.

Chess problems

  • Goal: make a position-problem. Conditions:
    1. Change real position (as little as possible, e.g. by removing, adding, transposing pieces) so that it would become a solvable:
      tactical
      checkmate
      stalemate
      draw by repetition
      etc
      problem.
    2. Publish these problems somewhere, e.g. post it in "problem makers" tournaments, your blogs, ebooks, or just place it in my blog comment-box, or send me by email: A. Position(e.g. fen code, (bmp) image) and problem; B. Well described problem.
    3. Your Top Ten selected positions might fight in "problem makers" tournaments where selected and all people groups will vote for them and find out the winner.

  • Goal: black starts and gets draw.
    Conditions:
    A. White is two pawns up(no more material advantage);
    B. If initial position has queens or rooks, exclude those initial positions where black can achieve draw by using only perpetual checks.

Unrated or unregistered games

Lots of people offer unrated and/or unregistered games.
It is OK.
Unrated games can be used for easy training: opening experimentation, etc. .
This is because usually people play unrated games more relaxed so freeing more imagination: "no rating will be changed, I can do what I want".
Unrated people are like kings - "not damaged by signs" - always "newborn", always with full undamaged dignity - always free like God - "I am not a slave of the game - I am playing now, I may not play after a moment, I may not play for a moment, I may not play for ever..."
Such freedom gives for a game more art qualities. Player can feel much more like an artist(creator, living creature) and much less like a machine(a piece of material with no moral feelings). And just imagine if we play a game with no time regulations out of Internet box...:D And let's give to this game some beautiful silence...

How to easier help a FICS user?

Not all questions TD Sibylle can answer.
It is sometimes good reformulate users question so that Sibylle could understand.
So the scheme can be depicted like this:
User's complex question --> my simplified question to Sibylle -->
--> Sibylle's answer --> copy of the answer to user(s)

How to find an opponent?

I-st method

  1. Somewhere in the Internet announce:
    1. Your possible and preferable playing schedule.
    2. Your possible and preferable game types.
    3. Your opening variations (or few thirst moves) you would like to play(try, analyze...).
  2. "shout", "cshout", "tell [channel e.g.:90/101]" something like this:
    I seek 90mins +30secs chess, rated, now or at scheduled time, with set or not set opening variation, please read my finger note 10 before any offer.
    And do(seek)so, from time to time until you'll have optimal opponent choice.
  3. view users of channels:
    inch 90
    inch 101
  4. finger [user in a channel]
  5. Contact a user:
    i. tell [user] "something"
    ii. tell [user] "Would you like to play time control xx yy game z? If yes, please read MY PREFERENCES -finger note 10.

There is how I set my finger note 10
(This too long to publish in FICS):
set 10 TO MY OPPONENTS
i. Opponent agrees that he will not make any questions, like "are you still there?", during the game. I have time on the clock and I can think until the end of it. If you are disappointed (or you think, you can be disappointed) about my thinking time, please do not start playing with me or just put me in "noplay" list.
ii. Opponent uses something like "ping [user]" command if some technical questions arise.
iii. Opponent proposes adjournment (best scenario) if he/she can't normally finish a game, otherwise - disconnects (worst scenario).
iv. We will play during game, neither talk, neither argue.
v. After the game we can discuss about it or anything else, if you like. We can even schedule a rematch or other game.
vi. You very well know that lack of respect to your opponent is clearly an abuse. And anything stronger abusive will surely reported to server admins.
vii. Be 100% sure that will be no tiny of argument with any kind (technical or psychological) of abuser. It simply will be reported to the server administration.
viii. Do not use playing programs at any game stage - it will be detected by various methods.
ix. Any abusive behavior does not worth its risk.
This short variant is FICS text length acceptable:
set 10 TO MY OPPONENTS: 1. My time zone: PDT+10. 2. We can schedule our matches/analysis. 3. We can play various game types/opening variations. i. Do not ask me to play faster(If there is time control). If you do not like time control that is offered, choose another. ii. We will play during the game, neither talk, neither argue. iii. If there are problems: offer to adjourn or simply disconnect. iv. Do not use playing programs at any game stage - it will be detected by various methods. v. WARNING: Any abusive behavior does not worth its risk.
D. If opponent agrees with your preferences, than:
match [opponent]

Favorite FICS commands

moretime [seconds]
takeback [halfmoves]

Who would not like to have a move back in a long game after unintentional move when game just started(and all players have plenty of time)?..

Also it is nice to get each other more time, especially, when both players have similar digits in there clocks and the players enjoy the game, or situation is really complicated and pleases to be solved.

[The list is not finished. Any suggestions for useful and more notable(then generally it is) commands? ]

One technical idea how to make Fischer Random chess more popular on FISC

To establish (automatic or manual or both) initial countdown game starter(s).
Thirst suggestions in 50-th FICS channel(Sat Apr 14, 17:25 EETDST 2012):
antiseptic(50):How I suggest to make wild fr play more frequent? It is to
adopt an initial countdown, i.e. before game, to start countdown (e.g. 15 second) so players would be sure that they are "thinking", and not aborting the game.
(Explanations will be published later on.)

    My chess opening study

    I. Opening choice may depend on your:
    1. Experience
    2. Opponent qualities
    3. Qualities
    4. Clock settings
    5. Analysis objects, scientific investigations
    6. Playing media
    7. Playing event
    8. Moods
    9. Other factors

    So in broader sense, there are no "bad" openings, only just underestimations. But our intelligent sense of humor let's us fairly name some openings as sharp as "crazy opening", "fools opening", or so. But deliberate usage or exploit there weakness, at some point might be effective. So this kind of database at certain situations might be useful, as well. And that is because certain playing conditions during the game determine difference between "winning" and "loosing". The faster the game and the less experience of players, the more chaos in the game is predictable.
    And isn't it fairly to name "all openings" with only one descriptive name "Chaos opening"?
    II. My chess opening study experience is not deep and broad. This work is an aim to reach a higher level in this area too.

    FICS formula

    Abstract.

    This article is based on FICS help file http://www.freechess.org/Help/HelpFiles/formula.html
    Formulas are very useful to filter users in all ways:
    1. Filtering seeks in main console,
    (only if seek is set to 1:    set seek 1     )
    2. Filtering seeks and using sought command.
    3. Filtering games automatically and immediately, using getgame f command. This command loads game board automatically if users seek fits your formula(probably the oldest seek is priority).
    Some tips. Formula can have so called "f-variables", named from f1 to f9.
    Formula variables can look like this: "1","2", "1minutes", "120", "time", "ratingdiff", or so, but they can be formulas itself, e.g. "time>2", "ratingdiff>-300". Usually "f-variables" are(or looks like) less complex then formulas. Not all logically correct "f-variables" does their job. The more complex variable is, the less possible that you will get the results you want(it just might be, that only a part of your variable will be accomplished). As I discovered, it is best thing, that "f-variables" are of only one type, e.g. variable setting:
    set f1 ( (time=2) & (inc=0) ) | ( (time=1) & (inc<=1) ) | ( (time=0) & (inc<= 12) )
    is well taken, because clock setting type (time and inc(increment))is used.
    But some parts, including "rated", of such a complex "f-variable":
    ( (time=2)&(inc=0) )& !atomic & !losers & !computer & rated & ( rating > (myrating - 150) )
    on my computer was ignored. That's why it is best your formula variables to have somewhere written.

    Fast seek formulas

    seek 5 0 u 2000-4000
    To ask for some color is better just "seek" with certain color
    : seek white f
    Other formulas
    set form time=10 & inc>=5 & inc<=15 & f1 & chess
    set form etime<3 & f1 & chess
    set form (etime<3 | (!chess & etime<=10)) & f1

    set formula chess & unrated & time>1 & time<=3 & inc=0 & white
    set formula (chess & unrated & time>1 & time<=3 & inc=0) | (board(fr)|board(4)|board(3)|crazyhouse & rated & etime>=2 & etime<=4)
    set formula (chess & rated & etime>2 & time<=5 & inc<=5) | (chess & unrated & time>1 & time<=3 & inc=0) | (board(fr)|board(4)|board(3)|crazyhouse & rated & etime>=2 & etime<=4)
    set formula (chess & rated & etime>2 & time<=5 & inc<=5) | (chess & unrated & time>1 & time<=3 & inc=0 & white) | (board(fr)|board(4)|board(3)|crazyhouse & rated & etime>=2 & etime<=4)
    set formula (chess & rated & etime>2 & time<=5 & inc<=5) | (board(fr)|board(4)|board(3)|crazyhouse & rated & etime>=2 & etime<=4)

    In those two formulas, second parts, where denoted "rated" and "unrated", does not work.
    set formula ((chess & time>1)|((board(fr)|board(4)|board(3)|crazyhouse) & inc=0)) & ((time<=5 & etime>2 & inc<=5 & rated)|(time<=3 & etime>2 & inc<=3 & unrated & white))

    set formula (time<=5 & etime>2 & inc<=5 & rated)|(time<=3 & etime>2 & inc<=3 & unrated & white)
    set formula (time<=5 & inc<=5 & rated)|(time<=3 & inc<=3 & unrated & white) set formula time<=3 & inc=0 & white & unrated
    set formula (((board(fr)|board(4)|board(3)|crazyhouse) & (etime<=5)&(etime>=3)|(chess & (etime<=24)&(etime>=16)))&(ratingdiff>-200 | assessloss>=-4))|(unrated & etime>=7) & !abuser & registered

    Idea: LCS!

    LCS - Little Chess Space.
    It is a practice of systematic playing, learning, and having a good time.
    Imagine a group of amateur players who wants to raise there level of there games and at the same time to spend time joyfully.
    What would they have to do?
    First, players should discover the weakest places in there game.
    Is it opening, middle-game, or endgame?
    Is it planning, combinations, tactics or strategy?
    Is there strongly felt difficulties in realization of positional or material advantage?
    Is there a lack of experience of analysis, playing long or correspondence games?
    Is there a lack of motivation?
    Once players founds out the keys to the better play and gets together, they can teach each other (proving there truths in the game or analysis practice).
    Game or analysis is a learning and getting better and better process.
    If you can feel better, is it not the best motivation fact of the playing(learning) process?
    Better "moves" (in chess board and in life board), better motivated communities gives us better opportunities in analysis, games, feelings,..., life.
    So join us!
    Let's get back to the game issues.
    Two main problems in the game is: begging and the end (opening(debut) and ending(endgame)). How to simply solve these problems?
    Simple answer: take object after object, analyze it and use in practice.
    There are plenty of objects, and I do not want to spend all the time in analysis and various unnecessary games(by computer or so), what to do? How to choose objects?
    The best choice is to choose exactly what you need at that moment.
    If you want to drink, you are going for something liquid and/or edible, if you find difficulties in getting it and you can ask for help, you are describing a problem and the description message(tell) to someone who can understand you and somehow help you. So what we found out now? How to achieve best results through the shortest time of period?
    We now that there are:
    1. Things that I and only I (by myself) can do better.
    2. Things that we (and only we) together can do better.
    3. Things that I could do by my self, but I will not (a: they are not necessary b: they are too difficult c: a+b), but I would do it in company with others(to get the important satisfaction for my motivation).
    Also very important question is:
    How to find the right person for the right problem?
    The answer is: knowledge what you need and the knowledge where and how to search.
    So there should be some descriptions, criteria, databases, and search engines.
    We have developed computers and software, also we have some useful brains in our heads. So what else we need? We need some time and health to accomplish our targets.
    If we do have, so let's do it.
    Let's get back to the game.
    Let's answer to more personal questions:

    Chess openings:
    1. You play them?
    2. You do not play them?
    3. You know plenty of them?..
    4. You don't know any of them?..
    5. You would like to discover the right-fit-to-you opening?
    6. List openings you know worst(but you'd like to know about them more) and openings you know best.

    Answers A,B,C... will describe my, your, other player needs and qualities.
    At some point I could help you, and at some point you could help me.
    Imagine we have a big database of subjects with there pluses and minuses, and we can easily search through it with other criteria(like possible playing or analysis time, age, language, living place, gender etc.), and contact each other... Yes! It would be some kind of dream.
    But we can do the same thing through the longer period of time communicating in blogs, chats, personal messages, forums etc. .
    Imagine, you create your database, I create my database, and both databases can be joined: dA + dB = dC. So now we can really do more than ever before(and much easier than ever before)!
    So let's do it.

    tell mamer finger [player]
    td finger [player]
    Below is my (as FICS user(antiseptic))examples of the (two upper) commands usage. I have played 28 tournaments on FICS, 6 times I was first, three times - second, and four times - third.
    So let's enter the command and get the results:

    FICS ECO

    ....................
    __I. Introduction ..
    __II. Preferences ..
    ....................

    I. Introduction

    .
    ................................................
    __A. Chess studies and playing using ECO codes..
    __B. Early accepted moves sequence..............
    ................................................

    A. Playing using ECO codes
    Using match command and eco code.
    match [user] eco [eco code], examples:
    match Kasparov eco a99.07
    match Kasparov eco a99.14
    B. Early accepted moves sequence.
    ....................
    __B1. Setup mode....
    __B2. Examine mode..
    ....................
    B1. Setup mode - the mode before "examine mode". If we need other than usual chess starting position, we are entering "setup mode". Otherwise, we just use "examine mode"(B2)
    Using bsetup.
    bsetup start
    Set up a position. The help of it: http://www.freechess.org/Help/HelpFiles/bsetup.html Or simply write down FEN code of piece placement like this:
    bsetup fen rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR
    When set up is completed, write down:
    bsetup done [and press enter to enter to examine mode.]

    B2. Examine mode. During "examine mode".
    Using examine .
    examine
    examine b chess
    If your opponent observing the examined game, then:
    mexamine [your opponent]
    And after every move enter:
    commit
    (If not entered,- moves are a temporary subvariation and are not saved for later examination.)
    Also you can enter other information, examples are names, clocks times.
    wname [whites player name]
    example: wname Kasparov
    bname [blacks player name]
    example: bname Karpov
    wclock [hh:mm:ss],bclock [hh:mm:ss],
    examples are 1 hour 30 minutes 30 seconds to both black and white:
    wclock 01:30:30 ,and, bclock 01:30:30.
    To start clocks write:
    unpause
    To stop them:
    pause
    If you have set up your clock times and unpause'd them, and if you mexamine'd your observer, you and your "observer" can play the game as any usual game with the exceptions:
    1. The finished or unfinished game will not be entered to "history" files.
    2. Server will not rate it.
    3. You must save it (or it will be permanently lost) manually using commands :
    mailmoves [game number]
    or
    jsave [place in journal] [game number]
    4. You must enter "commit" after every permanent game move to confirm that the move is in main variation and is not "just thinking" or "examination of the current position". Commit'ing, you confirm that analysis at this point of the game is over.
    More information on FICS website help files.

    II. My preferences

    A. Games.
    1) Chess. For white: 1.f4, 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4;
    2) Chess. For black: 1.e4 c5.
    B. Analysis methods.
    1) With human partner on-line(e.g. on FICS)
    2) With human partner off-line by email.
    3) Using chess datebases.
    4) Using chess program (e.g. playing against chess engine on-line/off-line).
